SKJALM HVIDESVEJ
Refurbishment and extension of summer residence in Asserbo Plantation
Location: Skjalm Hvidesvej, Asserbo. Denmark
Year of construction: 2007
Size: 180 sqm.
Our task was to transform a small family summer house into a year-round retreat, preserving its connection to the surrounding forest and enhancing its capacity to host family gatherings and celebrations.
The renovation was extensive, with only two roof rafters and a sliding door remaining from the original structure. Despite the comprehensive rebuild, the new house retains the spirit of the original 1976 design, aligning with the family’s desire for an updated yet familiar home.
The renovated house now serves as the heart of family traditions and the home's proximity to the forest provides magical setting all year round, with large windows that integrate the indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing the connection to nature.
The interior is clad in wood, creating a tactile, forest-like atmosphere. The Nordic materials used throughout, including Norwegian stone tiles in the bathrooms, sauna, and bathing courtyard, add to this natural feel. Each room has direct access to the forest, reinforcing the sense of being in nature.
The building plot was restricted by the homeowners' association, offering no flexibility. However, we met all the family’s needs, designing a house with ample space for two generations, including large well-separated bedrooms and bathrooms for privacy. The addition of a bathing courtyard and sauna catered to their love for outdoor bathing. A spacious living room was crucial for accommodating guests and providing comfort in all weather conditions.
The area’s strict building guidelines ensure the preservation of natural grounds. Building plots are limited, lawns are prohibited, and roofs must be grass-covered. The minimum plot size is 2400 m². These restrictions maintain the forest ambiance and prevent suburban landscaping styles.
